Georgian Etymology Inherited from Old Georgian *ვახშამი (*vaxšami, “supper”) attested in ვახშმობა (vaxšmoba, “to have supper”), borrowed from an unidentified Iranian descendant of Proto-Iranian *xšáfnyah (“evening; evening meal, supper”). Note especially Sogdian 𐼰𐼲𐽁𐼰𐼺‎ (ʾɣšʾm, “evening”) and the borrowed Ottoman Turkish آخشام‎ (ahşam) which likewise show a prothetic vowel a-. The development of the anlaut ვ- (v-) is hard to explain, yet according to Bielmeier most likely it was an internal Georgian addition. The word does not seem to be used in Laz or Mingrelian.
