Japanese Etymology From 斜陽(しゃよう) (shayō, “decline”, literally “setting sun”) + 族(ぞく) (zoku, “group of people”). Popularized after publication of the novel Shayō (The Setting Sun) by Osamu Dazai in 1947 (see quotation below).
