Svan Alternative forms ადრა (adra) Etymology From ჰად- (had-, “pontic azalea”) +‎ -რა (-ra, “plant, tree designation”). The reconstruction of the root varies by source: According to Klimov, from Proto-Kartvelian *ad- (“pontic azalea”). Cognate with Mingrelian ოდ-იშ-ი (od-iš-i, “Odiši”, the traditional name of Mingrelia), for which compare Svan ჰად-იშ (had-iš, toponym name in Svaneti). According to Čuxua, from ჰად-, ად- (had-, ad-) ← *ჲად- (*yad-) ← *ჲალ- (*yal-) ← *იალ- (*ial-), ultimately from Proto-Kartvelian *ial- (“pontic azalea”), cognate with Georgian იელი (ieli) and Mingrelian იოლი (ioli). For დ ← *ლ (d ← *l) he compares: Svan ქუდა (kuda, “flock of scutched cotton”) against Georgian ქულა (kula, “id.”); Svan ჯუ̂იდ (ǯûid, “wax”) against Georgian ცვილი (cvili, “id.”); Svan შედ- (šed-, “help”) against Georgian შველა (švela, “id.”). However the relation of the Svan root to Georgian and Mingrelian is rejected by Fähnrich.
