Chinese Etymology 1 The spelling 峇厘 (Bālí), attested in Lim (1886) and Zhou (2006), appears to be a phonetic spelling. Adele Fielde defines Teochew 舳 (bha7) as "bow of a vessel". Carstairs Douglas and William Campbell identify the Min Nan 閭／闾 (lî) element as "door", while Fielde defines Teochew 閭／闾 (li5) as "a habitation".
