Thai Etymology Believed to be a shortened form of พณหัวเจ้าท่าน (pá-ná-hǔua-jâao-tân), which is perhaps a corruption of พระณหัวเจ้าท่าน (prá-ná-hǔua-jâao-tân), literally "the divine being [who resides] at [our] head[s], he the lord". Pronunciation Noun ฯพณฯ • (pá-ná-tân) (now proscribed) used as a title for or term of address to a dignitary: Excellency, Grace, Honour, etc. Usage notes In former times, the term was used for high-ranking noblemen. The modern government of Thailand has, at least four times, ordered banning the use of this term: first in 1944, second in 1945, third in 1976, and fourth in 2005; but the term is still in use. The reasoning of the government is that honouring a person as "lord" or "divine being [who resides] at [our] head[s]" is incompatible with the democratic principles of equality.
